Art Deco Style

Not all items are typically Deco, but they all give the feel of it. :-)

Elements of the Art Deco style seem to be popping up all over the place recently. I was flicking through Veranda magazine the other day, and saw Jennifer Lopez's stunning house, designed by Michelle Workman. Although not as bold as the images above, her work had subtle hints of the Deco style. Altogether, the effect is very glamorous...  forties style brought into the 21st century.

Did you know that the popular sunburst and chevron (or as I say zig-zag) are all typical of the Art Deco period?? I know I didn't! Stainless steel, aluminium, inlaid wood and lacquered furniture were also widely used. The style is all about geometric shapes and shiny materials like mirror, chrome, and glass. Natural motifs, like flowers and sea shells were commonly used for fabrics, wallpapers, furniture and other fixtures. I love this example from a Calico Corners fabric, shown below.

All in all, I would describe the Art Deco style as streamlined, opulent, glamorous, striking and refined... It has all of the elements of the early Hollywood "silver screen" era.
